About the VW Transporter T5 (Policía)

The Transporter T5 is one of Europe's most widely used vans for both commercial and institutional purposes, including police forces that make use of its interior space and reliability.

History and trivia

The Volkswagen Transporter is one of the longest-running van lineages in the industry, tracing back to the Type 2 of the late 1940s, said by tradition to have been inspired by an improvised internal transport vehicle used around the Volkswagen factory. The fifth generation, known internally as the T5, launched in 2003 and marked a significant step up in comfort, safety and common-rail diesel engine technology compared with earlier generations, making it a popular choice for delivery and transport companies as well as public authorities across Europe.

Thanks to its reliability, spacious and configurable interior, and the availability of 4Motion all-wheel drive on some versions, the T5 was adopted by numerous European police forces as a response and personnel-transport vehicle, adapted for tasks ranging from prisoner transport to deploying riot units. That mix of ruggedness and versatility has made the Transporter, across its many generations, one of the most recognizable commercial vehicles on European streets, both as a working van and in institutional service.
