Toro Rosso (today Racing Bulls) was born in 2006 from the purchase of the former Minardi team, becoming the official young driver pipeline for the Red Bull program.
The team traces its roots to Minardi, the historic Italian outfit founded by Giancarlo Minardi that raced in Formula 1 from 1985 without ever winning a race, but earned lasting affection from fans as the plucky underdog fighting the sport's giants. When Red Bull bought the team at the end of 2005, it kept the Faenza, Italy base and renamed it Scuderia Toro Rosso, the Italian translation of "Red Bull," with the explicit goal of giving young drivers from Red Bull's junior program race experience before promoting them to the main team.
That driver-development role has been decisive in modern Formula 1: Toro Rosso has fielded, among others, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr., several of whom went on to win world championships after their time with the team or with Red Bull Racing. Vettel himself scored the team's only win under the Toro Rosso name at a rain-soaked 2008 Italian Grand Prix, a result still remembered as one of the grid's most celebrated upsets. The team changed identity again in 2020, becoming Scuderia AlphaTauri, and later, in 2024, Racing Bulls.
