The R26 gave Fernando Alonso and Renault back-to-back world championships, cementing the Spanish driver as a benchmark in F1 after breaking the dominance Michael Schumacher and Ferrari had held for years. The car, with Giancarlo Fisichella as teammate, featured an innovative mass damper suspension system designed to improve mechanical grip, which the FIA ended up banning mid-season after ruling it an impermissible moveable aerodynamic device.
Despite that loss of performance, Renault fought back and the title came down to the final races of the year, in a fierce battle with Schumacher that was ultimately settled in Alonso's favor at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the season's last round.
